A short bush walk from the main Haast Highway 6 brings the visitor to the pebbly banks of the Haast River and Fantail Falls.
The road between Wanaka and Haast was only opened in 1960 allowing access to a collection of new and unexplored waterfalls in Westland. It was shortly afterwards in December 1964 that Mt Aspiring National Park was established. The road, for part of the journey, follows the banks of the Haast River which many side tributaries drain into, such as the stream which hosts Fantail Falls.
