The largest living tortoise is the Galapagos Giant Tortoise which can weigh over 300kg or 661 pounds. The scientific name of the Galapagos Giant Tortoise is Geochelone elephantopus. The Giant Tortoise is recognised as a symbol of the Galapagos and is what the name of the islands is based on.
Unfortunately the Galapagos Giant Tortoise is listed as endangered. Depleted numbers are due to over collection by whaling and other ships as food for their crew. The Tortoise could survive stored on its back without food or water for months and therefore provided the crew with fresh meat during long voyages.
