A mountain steeped in geological and Maori history, Mount Taranaki is a stratovolcano situated near the West Coast of the North Island of New Zealand.

As the focal point of the Egmont National Park, Mount Taranaki's lower slopes are carpeted in rainforest which cover the volcanic slopes and provide a popular hiking destination for locals and visitors.

This picture shows a rarely unveiled Mount Taranaki at sunset, which in Maori mythology means he is displaying himself to his love - the beautiful Pihanga.
