What makes a lake? A lake is a large body of water, which is generally larger than a pond and exceeds a surface area of 5 to 8 hectares, although there are many variations on this definition and it's highly debated. The province of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada calls a lake (large or small) a pond. In some countries, a large lake will sometimes be called an inland sea.
Of all the world's lakes, over 60% of them are located in Canada. There are around 15 different classifications of lakes, which partly identifies how they were created whether natural or man-made.
Many lakes or reservoirs are man-made, held back by concrete dams then channeled through penstocks to pass by and turn turbines in order to generate electricity. Other lakes are created for recreational purposes, while others are a basin or volcanic crater which has filled with water
